Stopping automatic downloads from Google chrome
I love Google chrome as a browser, its simple, effective and makes browsing the web so easy and actually quicker than my previous browser internet explorer, but sometimes when I use google chrome as a browser, my mouse, being an optical mouse is a little to quick for me and I find myself having clicked on something that i did not mean to and immediately found that google chrome was downloading things automatically whether i wanted to or not.
Also some pages download things straight away without my permission and using chrome I found there was no way to prevent this from happening.
Occasionally I would also want to download the files in a different directory, without having to change the settings every time, but without changing the settings, chrome would only download to one place, so went to look for a solution to stop it downloading without my consent and to be able to change the directory that it downloads to sometimes.
And should you decide that you don't want to download something after all there is no way to stop it once it has begun, so once it started that was it, if it was a large file it could tie up my machine for quite a while.
So a search for a solution needed to be done, as it turns out the solution was a very simple one.
Firstly you would need to Open up your goggle chrome browser, and look for the tool bar at the top on the right hand side and look for the button that looks like a spanner , it has a little arrow on it click this.
From here, this will open up a selection of options, Scroll down the list and select options.
Once the dialog box opens you will see 3 tabs, select the last tab at the top which says "under the hood"
Now you need to scroll down until you come across a check box that says "Ask where to store downloads" and make sure this box is checked This is unchecked by default so click on it to select it then close the dialog box.
You may have to close down google chrome and restart it again to reset the options, but from now on when you accidentally click on a download link by mistake it will at least give you the option to cancel before saving to your directory.
You will also be able to change the directory of where the file will be stored as well.

Umm.. When you download something with Chrome, there's a button to pause the download, and there's a button to stop the download. How have you not noticed that? Also, the very first time you start Chrome, it walks you through all of those settings, so it's really your fault for not having that setup in the first place isn't it?
But what if i wanted to download with another programme like IDM and not Chrome...what should i do?
